We’re halfway through the top five Design Trends of 2016! We’ve already revealed the rustic polish of Farmhouse Fabulous, the glam of Glamily Rooms and the swanky-style of Tailored Retreats, if you missed any of them, check them all out in our blog archives! With three down and two more to go, this week’s reveal is all about the well-travelled style of the Southwest Sophisticate.
A kaleidoscope of colors, textures and materials found in the desert, the Southwest Sophisticate design trend is a contemporary interpretation of characteristics rooted in Mexican, Spanish and Native American traditions. Most at home in the desert southwest, elements of this design trend are seen more and more in city settings bringing an urban spirit to this wild west aesthetic.
1| Easy going materials for Southwest Sophisticate are meant to withstand the desert elements, (a.k.a. making them virtually maintenance-free)! Adobe architecture, exposed beams, kiva fireplace, Saltillo tile and colors from the desert combine for a casually comfortable vibe. TIP: Create a well-travelled home by incorporating Moroccan design elements into this trend, as done in this picture with the vintage lantern light fixture!
2| Color, Color, Everywhere! Inspired by hues only nature could create, simply look at the desert landscape to pull inspiration. Sophisticated variations on typically bright versions are perfect for the home, like this subdued aqua, rich terra cotta and warm sand. TIP: When using bold desert colors, separate them in a design with the use of black, white and gray to provide separation and a place for the eye to rest.
3| Indian trading blankets have been highly prized for over a century, as both craft and function for their native design and economic value. Today, these blankets represent a heritage, an art form, and storytelling in every design. When created in fashionable shades of black, white and gray, these historical artifacts provide an unforgettable element that epitomizes the Southwest Sophisticate.
4| Traditional for homes in warm weather climates, Saltillo tile provides a rustic and informal charm to spaces with their uneven edges, varied thicknesses and hand-made characteristics. Mixing tiles with geometric patterns in a graphic black and white creates contemporary drama for such an unexpected pairing.
5| As always, the crowning glory to all of our designs is perfect lighting! Southwest Sophisticate is part trendsetter and part wild, wild west. When interpreted into light fixtures, think polished, rustic and weathered. Like this ridiculously amazing drum chandelier that features the perfect combination of classically styled brass hardware, a rustic weathered leather harness and the stylish addition of Edison bulbs. Ohhh, swoon for Southwest!
